A Journey Of Music

One mans attempt to make it in the music industry. A journey of knowledge gained and set aside fears. Footsteps on a path of musical expression one memory at a time.

Hard Four Months For Passion

It’s been a hard four months since I was let go from my previous job working for Stanley Clarke. It’s been a hard four months of being confused, lost, and bitter. Engaging in one interview after another (a total of about four or five; one a month) Just to hear that someone else with “More Experience” is a better fit. That is the state of the business that I chose to work in. With larger companies eating up the smaller companies (Bug Music purchased by BMG is the most recent I recall) and smaller companies not being able to stand their ground against the larger companies while paralleling this struggling economy you find many unemployed music industry employees fighting that same fight that I am. The only difference is their resume has more time and experience to show case. The question is raised - How does one continue to break into a struggling industry and why would they even want to?

Passion

All the time I kept applying to industry positions while neglecting to apply to the average job at Subway or Barnes and Nobel (even though I should have) I stayed true to my passion knowing hoping that something would come through for my passion, and something did. Something great. Something that only pays a fraction of what I made previously, yet, something in my industry. Between other industry jobs I have done the “average jobs” to make ends meet. Starbucks and UPS to name a couple. They were not me. There was no passion there. No fulfillment.

Yeah, It has been a hard four months. Yeah, there will be more hard months to come. That is life - Hard times come and hard times go. Where I stand I know it is all about planing out my future with goals and a strategy in play. Time management will be crucial. There are 24 hours in a day. I only need to sleep for eight to feel rested. That leaves me with 112 hours each calendar week. My new job will utilize only 20 of those free hours. What do I do with the remaining 92 hours? I have a feeling that if they revolve around one word…things will play out as they should in life.

Passion.
